WELCOME to HUMBOLDT COUNTY - TRAVEL VLOG and TOUR of the GIANT REDWOODS! #travelvlog
Humboldt County is located 200 miles north of San Francisco and is a densely forested and mountainous rural part of California. We are here to visit the tallest trees in the world at the Redwood National and State Parks, and much more. The region also has 110 miles of scenic coastline, more than any other county in the state.
The region's main attraction is the Redwood National and State Parks. Redwoods originally covered more than 2 million acres until the timber business in the late 1800s. The Redwood National Park was formed in 1968 to help preserve and restore the old growth forest.
As soon as we enter the redwood forest, our jaws drop as we look up into the forest canopy. The trees date back on earth around 240 million years, first appearing shortly after the dinosaurs. They can live to be around 2000 years old and have a regenerative nature. Some are around as tall as the Statue of Liberty and as wide as two Volkswagen Bugs.
The redwood forest is a world heritage site. The largest surviving of the ancient coast redwoods are found here. Our guide, Justin Legge, is one of the region’s most well known and knowledgeable guides. He takes on a forest bathing adventure, where we experience the sights and sounds of the forest at a slow pace, and talk about the biology of these trees. Despite their size, the redwood cones are very small, around the size of a grape. We find the “Big Tree” or the one that was featured on The National Geographic.
Eureka is the jumping-off point to the redwoods. We base ourselves at the Carter House Inn, a hotel in Old Town Eureka, California. It is known both for the Restaurant 301 and for being a replica of a Queen Anne style Victorian building.
Places featured in this video:
- Sequoia Park Zoo - California's oldest zoo and home to the Redwood Sky Walk, an aerial adventure in the forest! @SequoiaParkZoo
- Trinidad - One of the most picturesque beaches in the area, and it's a mid-way point between the northern and southern redwood parks.
- Ferndale - A picturesque town that is home to dozens of Victorian architecture-style buildings.
- Arcata Scoop - Ice cream with a side of nostalgia
- Avenue of the Giants - a scenic 31 mile drive that weaves through the redwoods. The road is lined with the titan trees.
- Lost Cost Brewery - an award-winning independent brewery located in Eureka, California. @lostcoastbrewery9727
- Trinidad Bay Eatery - Serves delicious Seafood. Humboldt Bay is world-renowned for its Pacific Oysters
- Nori - Sushi spot in Arcata
- Restaurant 301 - The Carter House Inn's renowned restaurant known for its extensive wine list.
- Carter House Inn - A Victorian-style architecture bed and breakfast, ranked number 1 in Eureka: carterhouse.com/

Saskatchewan is the "Alabama of Canada"...A LOT of rednecks...high rates of alcoholism, drunk driving, school dropout rates, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, crime...and the "troubles of Indigenous folks". Growth in the province has been flat in comparison to the more "bountiful" provinces like Alberta (next door)...there is a noticable "lack of ambition" in Saskatchewan...people in Saskatchewan just want to "exist"...and they have tried to preserve "life as it was in the 1960s...simple, no frills"...Many in Saskatchewan live there to avoid the hustle and bustle of bigger, more sophisticated cities...Historically, many people leave Saskatchewan "for greener pastures" in Alberta...and other parts of Canada...jobs, opportunities...and better overall lives.

A treasure to visit and a pleasure to watch your vid. Additionally, Its interesting reading about the area where the Ewoks redwood forest was located in Star Wars / R.O.T.J. It was on private land and is logged off / unrecognizable. Therefore the park(s) are very special places! Thank you for the video!

I've been there twice, much prefer it to Napa. Don't be afraid to get off the wine trail (hwy12). I highly recommend a visit to Fort Ross Winery above Jenner, Sanoma's only coastal winery and above the morning fog layer of the valleys. Their Pinotage is unique and outstanding.

We just got back from The Rhine Viking trip & loved it. U can do the excursions or go on ur own, eat wherever u want, as long as the ship is in port. Pay attention to the time u must be back on board! But u can dive deeper into the culture, if ur that kind of more experienced unafraid traveler! The more u travel with Viking, the more perks u get (discounts on ur choice of wine upgrades, room upgrades, if available, etc.). The only way to go! It is getting younger. We r active tourists in early 12:33 60’s & noted many family groups! Already have trips planned for the next 2 years with Viking. We have traveled with families & found it affordable for all. It is expensive for singles, though. There’s other cruises for 18 & over that’s more affordable for singles, like Virgin.

Springtime is the least rainy/cloudy fyi. Which is good for being able to actually see the landscape. Summer can be extremely rainy, thus blocking the views. Although I personally love the rainy/mist/fog/rainforest vibes. The sunny spring days are what I’d recommend for being able to see all the epic scenery. I live on a boat downtown. Springtime is what I recommend.

The weather is hot in summer and cold on winter and you can see snows in the mountains of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Peak. Are the optional tours less crowded? I’m not a huge fan of tours in general, but feel too lazy to plan this time. TBH it doesn’t matter the size of the tour, you’ll look like a tourist if you’re in one. Also, they’re less than half a day, so is there any reason why you can’t spend the rest of the day on your own?
